As you may already know, "Jiu Jitsu" (Ju Jutsu) is loosely translated to, "The Gentle Art." "Jū" can be translated to mean "gentle, soft, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding. "Jutsu" can be translated to mean "art" or "technique." The average person will not know what "The Gentle Art" means or what it represents. Individuals who do train, however, will know exactly what it means and what it stands for. I feel that as you progress further in skill, the more gentle you become with your movements and submissions. And even though you are more gentle, you are still quite effective at doing what you do. I believe that because there is no punching and kicking, it is considered to be a little bit more on the gentle side. But we all know that gentle doesn't necessarily mean that there will be no pain. We train hard to be more gentle, becoming gentlemen or gentlewomen, in a different sense of the word.
